Six of us got together to ride from the shop at 8:30 on Saturday morning. The temperature wasn't too bad (maybe 30) and everyone was having a problem figuring out the right layering/clothes combination to keep from over-heating. I had to be back early so I was anxious to get started. I'm usually the one choosing the route. I tend to make up routes that zig-zag all over the place until no one knows where we are. That way, I'm sure the group won't leave me behind...they need me to find the way home. We ended up with about 55 miles. When I got back, Karma and I took off for a family get together. Later in the evening, we attended the Blue Jackets - Blackhawks game. We didn't get back home until about 11:00 Saturday night.
Sunday, I was meeting a group of 6 others for a ride from the shop at 9:00. I was a little tired from the ride and all the running around on Saturday but I didn't feel too bad. It was close to 9:30 before we finally left. The rumor was that a few were planning to do 90 miles. I didn't really want to go that far so I decided I would probably turn around a little early. I was feeling so good. Once we got going, I knew I was going to have a good ride. We rode down to Lynchburg (about 40 miles) and stopped at a small gas station for food. A few Slim Jims and a cream filled Little Debbie cookie was perfect. Kyle and Bill actually got ice cream. The temperature was in the low 60's and I had to keep pulling off clothes (vest, arm warmer, gloves) but ice cream seemed a little too much. When we started back we hit a full on strong headwind. Our group started to split up in the wind. I dropped back a couple of times to help pull the guys behind up to the front. I took our sign sprint back into Blanchester and decided to keep going on my own to see how far I could get before they caught me again. They didn't catch me until I had to stop and wait in Blanchester because I didn't know how to get through town. When it was all done, I had 78 miles.
I would like to know why I can sometimes do a long ride, like on Sunday, and literally not feel any of it in my legs. I think I felt better after 60 miles than I did after the first 10. I only feel like this on a few rides a year. Too bad I had to waste one on a December training ride.
