I did the
Son of Godzulla on November 4. Its a 72 mile "ride" in and around the Ohio River Valley. It is billed as a ride but everyone rides it as a race. Results are posted "for entertainment purposes only". The first 35 miles follow the Ohio River on pancake flat State Route 52. A left turn at the 35 mile mark starts the fun...the first climb reaches 18% near the top. From there it only gets worse. Riders are going up and down one hill after the next for the next 40 miles. Throw in a one mile section of mud and gravel and this is one classic ride. My Polar 710 said we gained 4400 feet in the last 35 miles. The feature climb is 28%
Weil Hill. This was definitely one of the steepest hills I have ever ridden. I had a 39x25 gear and still had to weave back and forth across the road until I reached the top. 60 started at 9:00 AM with the temperature at a very cold 25 degrees. I made it a point to smile big every time I saw a photographer (see the pic above). I was in what became the second group on the road until the penultimate climb when my leg finally gave up the good fight. I finished 15
th, 12 minutes behind the "winners". I will be back to try again next year.
