Wednesday Worlds
I did my second Wednesday Worlds of the year this past Wednesday. I used to do the ride a few years ago and now that I back in Columbus I get the pleasure of riding it again. The Worlds is a big hammer fest that has been around for as long as anyone can remember. It draws 40 to 60 riders to Avery Park in Dublin all with the hope of hanging with the local pros and wannabes to the final sprint back to Dublin.
I had a terrible ride my first week out. I cramped bad about 8 miles from the finish and had to let the group go. I then made a wrong turn on the way back in and rode a few miles out of my way before I finally found my way back to the park. Jeff and Mike were great about waiting for me and nursing me back to Jeff's house and my car. A miserable 70 mile ride.
This past week was a lot better. I popped a few Endurolytes during the day in hopes of avoiding the cramps I had last week. I met Takenbake and Mike in UA for the 20+ mile ride to the Worlds. Its a great way to warm up before the pain and punishment starts. The pace was fast but manageable for most of the first half of the Worlds but just as we made the turn for the last dozen miles, the attacks started. Mike, two A-F guys and a couple of others went up the road at about 35 mph. They got a good gap but our group got it's act together and had a good pace line going and brought the guys back. Actually, a strategically placed stop sign helped slow the front group just enough for the rest of us to catch up. I was just happy to finish with the front guys this week. A quick stop at a UDF for a Coke and we headed back to Takenbake's. All told, we had 75 miles. Not bad for a Wednesday night ride.
