New Year's Weekend Riding
I managed to get in a couple of rides New Year's weekend. I met the usual early group (if you can call four of us a group), Dave, Jon and Jim, at Wheelie Fun on Saturday at 8:00. The plan was to ride out and be back at Wheelie Fun at 9:30 so that Dave could get cleaned up and open the shop. The rest of us would then ride back out with anyone who showed up to ride at 9:30. I had a flat five or six miles into the ride. We stopped and I got it changed pretty quick despite my nearly frozen hands. We got back the the shop at 9:40 and pickup Dick, Chris, Tosh and Corey. It was a pretty easy pace until I went for a sign sprint and decided to keep going. Dick and Chris bridged up and we traded pulls for the next few miles until Jon pulled everything back together. I had to take a lot of grief from everyone for my idea of "winter pace". I ended up with 72 miles by the time I got home. There was talk of getting the group together for a ride on Sunday but I told everyone I couldn't commit to a specific ride time. The weather forecast said rain anyway so I was planning to see how it went and ride the trainer if the weather was bad.
It was raining (and warm) on Sunday morning. The forecast called for rain pretty much all day so I figured I'd be riding the trainer sometime. I ended up cleaning out my closet all morning. I filled two large garbage bags with clothes I hadn't worn in a long time. I was surprised at how few different clothes I actually wear. People who see me regularly must think I only have two shirts and one pair of pants. Karma and I decided to run some errands. We were in the middle of our running around at 1:00 when the sky started to clear. I was thinking I might be able to get out for a dry ride later but it wasn't long before the clouds came back and the rain started again. We got home around 5:00 and I was still thinking I might get on the trainer for a short spin....5:30, I'm hungry. I'll get something to eat and then ride the trainer....6:00, I just ate so I'll give the stomach a chance to settle...6:30, stomach still feels a little full, better wait just a little longer...7:00, a beer sounds really good right now...7:15, who am I fooling, I have no intentions of riding the trainer...7:16, I think I'll just sit here and drink. New Year's Eve...Karma made it to 10:00 PM...I made it to 12:30 by watching VH1 and South Park reruns...woohoo happy new year.
I had committed to meeting Dave, Jim and Dick at Wheelie Fun at 9:00 on New Year's Day. It was cool but it wasn't raining when I rolled out to meet the guys for the ride. As soon as I got to the parking lot, it started to rain. Jim, Dick and I went inside the store where Dave getting his bike together. Dave mentioned a couple of times that there were plenty of extra trainers and we could do a nice dry ride inside but we were all committed to riding outside on New Year's Day. The rain stopped shortly and we where out on the wet roads. The wind really pickup and switched from the southwest to the northwest. We had to fight a strong 20 mph head wind the last 15 miles of the ride. I rolled back home with 47 miles ridden. It was worth it, although I was worthless for the rest of the day. I spent all afternoon and evening on the couch in front of the TV.
