Paradise

Another of week on the trainer and another weekend on cold wet roads. Its been the theme for a few weeks now. Its the middle of winter so what else should I expect, right? I'm not complaining, just stating the situation. I've made a trip to San Diego the last two winters for a week of warm weather riding but its not going to happen this year. I just heard, on the radio this week, the average daily high temperature is now rising. I'll be trying to get home from work early enough a couple of days a week now to ride outside instead of spending time on the trainer. The time change is on March 9th, I really looking forward to it.

I got out this past Saturday for a couple of hours. We had rain and snow on Friday so I guess I should not have been surprised that some of the roads were a little icy. The forecast was sunny with temps in the upper 30s. It was 28 and cloudly when I rolled out at noon. A good two hours that I didn't have to do the trainer.
Just another day of riding in paradise.

I rode down to Hoover to meet Rob, Doug, Scott and Glen at noon on Sunday. It was still pretty cold...low 30s I think but a little warmer than Saturday. We were having a really good ride until I hit a dog. That's right, I hit a dog and (gasp!) broke my carbon fork. I saw the little black dog coming from the yard on the right. I knew right away that if it didn't slow down or change direction, I was going to nail it. When I hit him, he somehow got caught in my wheel. It was a little weird, I didn't fall right away. I just kind of kept rolling with the dog squelling as he tried to free himself from my wheel. I finally fell over and the dog jumped up and ran away. I feel really bad for the dog because I know it had to be hurt. I picked myself up, and started checking the bike and found a crack in the fork. First a broken carbon wheel and now a broken fork. I'm begining to believe carbon fiber sucks. There's no point in trying to get the dog's owner to pay for the fork. His house is literally a shack. No way I could get anything from him. I guess it could have been worse, I didn't lose any skin or tear any clothes when I fell. I was able to ride the bike home. Now I've got to find a replacement fork.

Proof that duct tape can fix almost anything. Can it fix a broken carbon fiber fork?
